Trade not aid
At a difficult time when domestic spending is being cut back and people are going hungry and cold in the UK, we call on the Government to totally eliminate its overseas aid programme for the duration of the current and next Parliament.
The Government ring-fenced and raised the Department for International Development's budget by 34.2 per cent, to £11.5bn over the next four years. This outruns Britain's current record spend of 0.56 per cent GDP on overseas aid and will see it rise to 0.7 per cent of GDP in 2013.
We are not opposed to overseas aid in principle, but believe that while UK taxpayers and voters are enduring genuine hardship, the elimination of this problem should take precedence over helping overseas nations.
