Institute Proportional Representation before the next General Election.
Recent events show how, with a first-past-the-post system, decisions of huge import can be decided by tiny margins, especially with low turnout. It is wrong that MPs are elected, or referendums decided, by simple majority, especially when voting is optional. Proportional and mandatory voting, now.
In the 2017 UK election more than 30 MPs were elected with majorities of less than 500. https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/insights/ge2017-marginal-seats-and-turnout/
The Brexit Referendum, a generationally important decision, was decided by 52/48% when 27% or the eligible electorate failed to vote. The beneficiaries of 'winner takes all' voting are highly organised, massively funded, parties to the exclusion of minorities.
Our electoral system is unfit for the 21st century.
