Open an Independent Enquiry into the 2016 UK EU Membership Referendum
This enquiry is not intended to change the outcome of the referendum. It aims to ensure the democratic process remains appropriate and fair, taking into account social media, privately funded campaigns and accuracy of statements made by MPs during political campaigns, using the UK EU as a study.
Enquiry topics are:
• Appropriateness of asking a binary question on a topic such as EU membership
• The role of social media in influencing the result delivered by the electorate
• The role of tabloid press in influencing opinion on the UK's EU membership
• Accuracy of facts presented by MPs and campaigners
• Audit to source of official and unofficial campaign funds
• Accurate of statements made by MPs during the campaign
Recommendations should be made from any lessons learned.
