No Compromise with the Public Sector
We are in an age of austerity, where we have record levels of debt which the government is trying to reduce before the interest payments cripple our ecomony. At a time where people in the private sector are losing their jobs, and everyone is having to make sacrifices, the public sector does not seem to want to play its part. The government should hold firm, not be held to ransom by strikes which threaten our most important services (health, emergency, transport) and which further damage the economy at a time we can least afford it. Even the opposition peer Lord Hutton, who conducted the review, concluded that the current deal was fair, and possibly even too generous. If the strikes continue, the government should consider implementing its statement that it will withdraw the current offer that is on the table. Without the protection of the Eurozone, we do not want to be in the same position as Greece, Italy, Spain, Ireland...
