Petition Action

Amend this process so petitions can't be unilaterally blocked at response stage

Petition Details

Petitions with millions of signatures have been blocked before even being debated in parliament, in a unilateral and undemocratic decision, as part of the "Response From Parliament" currently triggered at 10,000 signatures. This is preventing the site from achieving its aim of improving democracy.

Additional Information

Revoke Article 50 has at time of writing achieved over 5.9 million signatures. The setting of 100,000 for triggering a "Debate In "Parliament indicates an understanding that each signature represents the views of many who will not see the petition. Yet the proposal, as many others, has been blocked before it has even had its Debate. This process is unacceptably open to abuse and subverts the intention of a petition site for parliament, to give the people a greater voice.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because we aren't sure what action you would like the UK Government or Parliament to take.

The Government has said it will respond to all petitions that receive 10,000 signatures. This is the Government's view on the petition, it does not "block" the petition or prevent it getting a debate. The Petitions Committee will consider all petitions that get 100,000 signatures for debate. A Government Minister has to respond to that debate, whether or not the Government has already issued a response.

You could start a new petition setting out clearly what you would like changed.
