MP's who vote against constituents should face a petition to force a by-election
The role of an MP is to represent their constituents. Numerous MP's voted against their constituency wishes in parliamentary 'meaningful' or 'indicative' votes following the Brexit referendum. This is a national outrage, undemocratic and creates division between a political elite and communities.
Parliamentarians have let their electorate down. This has directly resulted in the breakdown of the Brexit process.
I propose that any MP voting against their electorate in such circumstances be subject to to a constituency petition.
If 10% of eligible voters support the petition then a by-election must occur.
This approach ensures MP's consult widely with voters before referendums.
MP's who ignore their constituents do so in the knowledge that that they may be relieved of their role.
You can't sign this petition because it was rejected. But you can still comment on it here at Repetition.me!
The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
There's already a petition about this issue. We cannot accept a new petition when we already have one about a very similar issue.
You are more likely to get action on this issue if you sign and share a single petition.
