A general election will be called if the government changes its leader
This petition proposes that in the event of a change of leadership by the incumbent government, a general election must take place 18 weeks after the new leader is elected.
18 weeks provides provision for a stable prime ministerial handover, followed by the opportunity for the electorate to confirm or reject the government’s new working arrangements.
John Major in 1990, Gordon Brown in 2007 and Theresa May in 2016, all assumed the role of Prime Minister without confirmation from the electorate, calling general elections much later at a time of their choosing. This petition proposes an end to this practice.
