Require gov.uk login to sign online petitions
The recent petition to remain in the EU exposed a major flaw in the government's online petition system. By using a gov.uk login, signatories can be verified as UK citizens.
You can't sign this petition because it was rejected. But you can still comment on it here at Repetition.me!
The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
We can't accept your petition because we aren't sure what action you would like the UK Government or Parliament to take.
Under the rules agreed by the House of Commons, anyone who is a UK resident or British Citizen can start or sign a petition. This includes people who live in the UK who are not British citizens. Similarly, people who use .gov.uk are not necessarily British citizens.
You could start a new petition calling for the rules to be changed so that only British citizens can sign petitions on the Government and Parliament petitions site and introduce a requirement to have an individual account to do so if that is something you would like to see happen.
