Put any agreed withdrawal deal to a public vote before leaving the EU
There was never any mandate for any specific deal at the Referendum (52% split between multiple paths, 48% united on a single path) or at the General election (no party gained a majority).
There *could* now be public backing for a specific deal but that must be proven through a public vote.
Logically it's almost mathematically impossible that a mandate for 1 option could have been possible given:
- the 52% Leave vote was split between roughly 6 distinct Leave options (see indicative votes / or here www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainers/options-uk-trading-relationship-eu)
- there was a large minority (48% backing) for Remaining in the EU
The government will choose a specific option. Refusing to clarify if that can deliver a mandate (for the 1st time) would be undemocratic.
