Petition Action

Save the Royal Navy

Additional Information

The purpose of this e-petition is to raise awareness that Britain's senior service is not adequately equipped to defend Britain or deter aggressors and focus the Government’s attention on the much needed task of increasing Britain's defence budget to match real needs.

Without the Type 22 frigates, the RN only has a weak complement of 2 helicopter carriers, 6 air defence destroyers, 13 frigates, 2 landing craft, 7 attack submarines and 4 Trident submarines - barely matching Spain. This is not adequate to protect our island, let alone overseas territories which have entrusted their defence to Britain, or even guarantee strength in diplomacy.

Retaking the Falkland Islands would be impossible without at least two full size aircraft carriers. It is dangerous to assume that an enemy would not seek to neutralise land based aircraft so proper debate is needed to accelerate the construction of the new aircraft carriers and equip them with suitable aircraft including a naval Typhoon.
