Petition Action

Stop Filibustering in Parliament

Petition Details

Some very important Private Members bills for example to prevent upskirting and Female Genital Mutilation. Members of Parliament have filibustered ( talked non stop about nothing) to prevent these bills from proceeding to the next stage.

Additional Information

Sir Christopher Strope filibustered his way through the Private Members Bills mentioned above. Filibustering is a waste of Parliamentary time and taxpayers money and patience and makes the House of Commons ridiculous.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because we aren't sure what action you would like the UK Government or Parliament to take to stop filibustering.

The Speaker and his deputies already have powers to stop MPs from filibustering if their speech repeats itself or is irrelevant to the debate. It's a decision for the person chairing the debate as to whether the MP speaking is breaching those rules or not. The House can also vote to bring a debate to an end early in order to secure a decision. This is called a "closure motion".

You could start a new petition setting out clearly what further action you would like taken.
