Petition Action

Grant asylum to Julian Assange to protect him from facing charges for Wikileaks

Petition Details

Julian Assange has been recently arrested by the UK government after having been under the protection of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. If he were to be extradited to the US he could face life in prison for exposing the murder of civilians in Iraq by US soldiers on the Wikileaks website.

Additional Information

Granting asylum would give Assange protection from extradition and therefore protect his human rights.
Keeping the government in check should not be a prosecutable offence otherwise we are no different from totalitarian regimes.
Please sign this petition to protect Assange's rights and by extension our own.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

Granting someone asylum does not prevent them from being prosecuted or extradited, so we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

You can find out more about claiming asylum here:
