Legal traffic light labelling for food products flown, shipped or UK-produced.
Traffic light system on all food packaging showing how the item has reached the shelf with Green representing domestic goods, Amber representing shipped goods and Red representing goods flown in.
Flying in goods is 100 times more polluting than shipping in goods.
Half UK food is imported. 1% of this is by air which accounts for 11% of carbon emissions. Since 1992 the amount of food flown in has risen by 140%.
Traffic light labelling would allow consumers to recognise and base purchases of goods from a nationally recognised standard indicating environmental impact.
