Petition Action

Parliament to ensure that Government responds accurately & honestly to petitions

Petition Details

Several recent Government responses to petitions have not been entirely accurate in their claims. Public trust in the political process requires that all Government communication is fully honest & correct. We request that the Petitions Committee pre-assess the accuracy of all petition responses.

Additional Information

The Government response to the recent huge petition to revoke Article 50 (with currently over 6 million signatures) states, inaccurately: "This Government wrote to every household prior to the 2016 referendum, promising that the outcome of the referendum would be implemented."

In fact, David Cameron's Govt ran the 2016 referendum & managed related communications. No Govt can bind a successor, & Cameron resigned in 2016, replaced by Theresa May, & a new Govt following the 2017 general election.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The Petitions Committee already considers all government responses to ensure that they meet the standards agreed with the Leader of the House. When responses don’t meet the rules, the Committee can already decide to request a revised response from the government. We're therefore not sure exactly what further action you'd like to see.

The responses to petitions are provided by government departments. You are very welcome to contact them, to let them know your views. You can find their contact details here:

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
