Put an end to Trial by Twitterstorm
We call on the government to enact robust legislation explicitly protecting employees and contractual partners from being sacked or disciplined on the basis of social media outrage (so-called ‘Twitterstorm’).
There have been a number of recent cases of people being sacked from their jobs or disciplined simply for expressing a point of view, following a Twitterstorm against them.
In a number of cases the actions taken against them by their employer were illegal under the Equality Act 2010, Section 19 (which prohibits indirect discrimination), and the European Convention on Human Rights, Article 10 (which guarantees freedom of expression and is UK law).
Freedom of speech in the UK must be protected!
