Help shoppers make green choices by mandating environmental impact labelling.
We have labels on food products and cigarettes to help us make informed choices about our health, now we need an equivalent to help us understand the environmental impact of products that we buy. Product labels need to provide ratings against various environmental criteria.
Labels should tell us the extent to which the manufacturing of a product has damaged habitat, depleted finite resources, generated waste & emissions, the miles the product has travelled, whether the product is recyclable / biodegradable, a measure of quality / expected life of a product to tackle built in obsolesce. We need this information to help us understand the environmental cost of a product and to help us make choices in support of the most responsible organisations.
