If an MP leaves party they got their seat in they have to hold a by-election
When a general election is held MP's are voted in because of the political party they represent.
If an MP then leaves that party then they should have to hold a by-election to see if the constituents still want that MP to represent them as they voted for the Party not the person
Recent developments were MP's left their parties whose manifesto was to leave the EU in the last general election and formed a new party who are campaigning to stay in the EU means the constituents of each MP are not getting the representation they voted for when they voted for that MP.
