Petition Action

Require members of the House of Lords to participate in order to claim expenses.

Petition Details

In May 2019 it was revealed by the Guardian that several members of the House of Lords claimed expenses despite barely participating, costing almost £3.2m in allowances. The rules must be changed so that peers can only claim taxpayers' money if they have actively participated in Lords business.

Additional Information

The House of Lords financial support rules allow members to claim money if they attend the House (either £153 or £305 for each day). But there is no record of how long a member claiming this money actually stays present at the Lords and they can claim it even if they do not participate regularly, e.g. by voting, speaking or sitting on committees.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

This is the responsibility of the House of Lords, not the UK Government or the House of Commons. We can't accept petitions that are solely the responsibility of the House of Lords.
