Change the law on postal votes so only the registered disabled can use them.
An electoral court in Birmingham found evidence of large scale postal voting fraud in local elections in 2004. Also Peterborough in 2004, Slough in 2007 and Bradford West 2005 in the general election. All led to convictions. More than 100 people convicted for (mostly postal vote) fraud since 1994.
Voting in person is a public good, increasing a sense of community. There are also concerns about the use of postal votes increasing the possibility of fraud. Democracy must be protected. Postal votes should only be available where absolutely necessary; i.e. for the registered disabled only, serving members of the armed forces and expatriates who are entitled to vote. All eligible voters should be made to actively engage in our democracy unless there is a very good reason why they can’t.
