Intentional deception during elections or referendums to be made illegal.
Advertisements are required to be legal, decent, honest and truthful. Political advertising is not subject to any such restrictions. Existing candidates can make any claim, ignoring facts, and there is no redress. Perpetrators cannot be prosecuted. This is unfair and not reasonable in our democracy.
There have been several recent examples of false claims being made. The most well-known of these was during the EU referendum and was written on the side of a red bus. It related to the money contributed weekly by the UK to the EU.
Those standing for public office or publicly promoting a particular view in a referendum should be able to be held to account for the claims they make.
