Mandate that major supermarkets use recyclable and/or biodegradable packaging
Packaging from major supermarket chains accounts for a substantial portion of household waste however the packaging of many items is neither recyclable nor biodegradable, resulting in unnecessary damaging impact to the environment. Mandating the use of green alternatives will help mitigate this.
In 2018 environmental consultants Eunomia estimated that the top supermarkets are creating a plastic waste problem of more than 800,000 tonnes each year - well over half of all annual UK household plastic waste of 1.5m tonnes: https://bit.ly/2mEPvn4
Also in 2018 consumer group Which? reported that almost a third of plastic packaging used by UK supermarkets is either non-recyclable through standard collection schemes or difficult to recycle: https://bit.ly/2NozH3J
