Take immediate action to save independent retail from dying
The UK retail industry is in crisis and 100's of independent retailers are being forced to close their shops every week.
Independent shops provide employment, support their local communities and pay tax.
IMMEDIATE and MEANINGFUL action must be taken to save independent retail.
We ask the government to:
Fund research on the impact of indie shop closures & online shopping on the UK economy
Set up a retail crisis fund to provide emergency assistance to indie retailers
Introduce a law to protect indie retailers from greedy landlords, to include:
- Tenant right to independent review prior to eviction (when landlords are in breach and/or retailers have history of lease compliance)
- Tenant right to independent rent review when market and/or property conditions change.
