Introduce legislation to change Police Act 1996, allowing police to form a union
The Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) is the statutory staff association for police Constables through to Chief Inspectors. Under The Police Act 1996 police are prohibited from forming trade unions. However PFEW has let members down badly and we ask parliament to allow a union to form.
Under UK labour law, the police are prohibited from joining ordinary trade unions to defend pay and working conditions, by the Police Act 1996 and instead are represented by a statutory staff association known as the Police Federation of England and Wales.
The PFEW has let its members down badly over negotiations with government on pay, pensions and working conditions.
We call on parliament to bring about legislative change so police can form a union instead to better represent officers.
