Universal Credit to treat Student Income as any other income.
There are many mature students with families trying to better there lives, and move from the welfare system in to higher paid employment, but to do this a degree or higher qualifications are needed. At the moment Universal Credit remove 100% student income from the awarded Universal Credit.
Universal Credit is a benefit where previous welfare's have been rolled into one. Previously students with families were able to claim Child Tax Credits and Housing Benefit, both of which treated student income as any other income. Universal Credit has a taper rate or 63% for employed income, but 100% for student income.
This means a mature student with a family, cannot receive any more money than if they were unemployed. Stifling social mobility, and leaving them stuck in poverty claiming UC.
