Put an option on ballot papers for a ‘jury’s choice’ MP
Many people don’t vote in elections because they don’t want to be represented by any of the candidates standing. Some of those non-voters feel we’d be better served if MPs were chosen through some form of random selection; those people are currently denied the chance to properly express their will.
Many capable, diligent, public-spirited people would never actively seek to become MPs but would willingly step up to the responsibility, if called upon.
We ask that Parliament require that:
a) all ballot papers for elections to Parliament include an option for a ‘jury’s choice’ MP; and
b) if that option wins, a jury (composed of randomly-selected members of the local electorate who are willing to serve as MP) be convened to discuss the role and choose one of their number to be the new MP.
