To provide specialist perinatal mental health inpatient services in Wales.
In Wales, there are currently no inpatient perinatal services for women suffering with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and psychosis etc. Statistically 10% of women suffer with mental health issues during pregnancy and in the weeks and months after giving birth.
For women suffering with the most severe forms of mental health issues during this time may require hospital admission. In these circumstances patients are either admitted to acute mental health wards or transferred to England for specialist treatment. Acute wards are not equipped for caring for new Mother's and their babies and being transferred to England for treatment, away from family, could be very distressing and traumatic for these women.
