Make a custodial sentence mandatory if guilty of "Assault on a Police Officer"
Assaults on police officers are increasing. There is no real deterrent to persons committing this offence. It is only right and proper the law should offer police officers protection by making a prison sentence mandatory if the offender is found guilty of any assault on a police officer.
Police officers put themselves at risk of assault daily in the course of there duty, protecting the general public and upholding the law. It is only right and proper the law should offer them protection by making a prison sentence mandatory if the offender is found guilty of any assault on a police officer.
This would act as a deterrent to those who would assault a police officer without fear or hesitation of the consequences.
