Petition Action

Demand sanctions against Venezuela's Dictator to halt destruction of Amazon

Petition Details

Venezuela's Dictator Nicolás Maduro favours illegal mining of the Amazon rainforest over conservation, escalating deforestation. This activity threatens indigenous populations, loss of a precious and complex ecosystem and a vital carbon store that slows global warming.

Additional Information

Indigenous people have called for the EU to impose trade sanctions on Dictator Nicolás Maduro to halt the deforestation because they fear genocide. Also, the UK parliament has recognised a climate emergency. The Amazon rainforest is an important carbon store, absorbing huge volumes of CO2 each year, its deforestation is of global significance. The intrinsic value of the rainforest should also be recognised.
Sanctions are used elsewhere for important issues as an effective means to force action.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action. We understand you're concerned about destruction of the Amazon rainforest but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the UK Government or Parliament to do. In particular, we not sure if you want the UK Government to impose trade sanctions or demand the EU impose trade sanctions. You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you'd like the UK Government or Parliament to do.
