Let voters control the pay package of their MPs
David Cameron has called for shareholder control of top salaries, saying, "Let's empower the shareholders by having a straight shareholder vote on top pay packages." This is a fitting moment for the government to empower the voters by having a straight public vote on the pay packages of the people
they elect.
There is a widespread feeling in the country that MPs are overpaid and out of touch with the lives of those they purport to represent. The public are forced to pay the taxes from which the MPs take their remuneration at levels they themselves set. Now would be a good moment to bring accountability into politics and begin to close the growing chasm between the electors and
the elected.
