A by-election must occur when an MP changes party allegiance during a Parliament
Members of Parliament must test the continued democratic mandate from their constituency when switching party allegiance. Not to do so disenfranchises the majority of voters who elected them until the end of the fixed term Parliament period, to the detriment of democratic representation.
