Petition Action

Make intentionally spitting in public a criminal offence

Petition Details

Spitting in the street is possibly one of the most antisocial behaviours one can do. Other than medical emergency there is no excuse. It is not only extremely unhygienic but also deplorable and teaches bad habits and disrespect to all young people who witness it.

Additional Information

This petition proposes that anyone caught spitting in public would face a fine similar to that introduced regarding littering.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. Spitting can already be considered in the same way as littering. You can read about a specific case in Waltham Forest here:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-21439973

It is for individual councils, rather than the UK Government or Parliament, to decide whether to enforce these by-laws.
