Petition Action

Obey the Law, Extend Article 50

Petition Details

Parliament has passed a law that requires the Prime Minister to ask the European Council to extend article 50. Therefore, we call upon the Prime Minister to obey the law, request an extension of Article 50 and secure one until at least the 31st of January 2020.

Additional Information

The European Union (Withdrawal) (No. 2) Act 2019 obliges the Prime Minister to request an extension to the Article 50 negotiating period for the purpose of negotiating a withdrawal agreement unless the House of Commons has passed a motion which either approves a withdrawal agreement or approves departure without a deal, and the House of Lords has debated the same motion. If such a motion is not approved, the Prime Minister is obliged to make the request no later than 19 October 2019.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. The Government has confirmed that it will follow the law.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
