Petition Action

Stop Public Transport Discrimination.

Petition Details

Free bus passes are given to people in England at the retirement age of women, i.e. 65. But in London anyone who lives and travels within London gets free public transport at the age of 60. This is discriminatory against those outside London and should be rectified.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We understand you're concerned about public transport for older people but we're not sure exactly what you want the UK Government or Parliament to do.

In particular, we're not sure whether you're concerned about all public transport in England, or just bus travel, or at what age you want free travel to be available to older people.

We can only accept petitions which call for actions that are the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament. Public transport policy within London is the responsibility of the Mayor of London and Transport for London, accountable to the London Assembly.

You could start a new petition calling for a clear action that is the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament. For example, you could call for free bus passes for people aged 60 and over in England, if that's what you want to happen.
