Government to change licensing legislation for private hire vehicles & taxis
Passenger safety is paramount. Currently, a taxi operator can be rejected for a licence in one area but approved in another due to different licensing standards set by individual local authorities. Once a licence is obtained, the driver can operate anywhere, including the area they were rejected.
The government needs to implement one set of nationwide standards for all operators to meet, which can be appropriately enforced, or leave the decision to local authorities about who can operate in their area and who can’t.
Safeguarding our children and ensuring passengers are protected should be the primary factor in decision making. Some councils however, are driven more by profit than people and will issue licences to questionable individuals without the be necessary checks or oversight.
