Accountability In Public Office Or Service
There is no formal, automatic system of individual accountability in public office (or service) in our society.
Decisions are taken by Ministers, Civil Servants, Police, Doctors, Surgeons etc. on behalf of us all and there should be permanent, individual responsibility for that choice.
By the time the consequences of a bad decision are discovered, the relevant person has moved-on.
Where harm has been caused, there needs to be a direct link back to the individuals who made the original decision/action.
There needs to be a legal contract with the public, so that any decision/action is permanently 'owned' by the individual(s) who made it.
Where it can be shown that choices were made that were known, or should have been known, to be harmful - then the individual(s) who made the decision should be legally and personally responsible.
Those in public office/service should take more care in their deliberations, knowing that they will always be personally accountable.
