Increase the criteria for a successful referendum to require a "clear majority".
Referendums can and have been deeply divisive, therefore defining the success criteria for future referendums should exceed the 50+1 rule.
I propose increasing the threshold to 60%+ of the turnout to be classified as a "clear majority".
Examples of divisions created through the 50+1 rule would be the Scottish Independence referendum of 2014 and the "Brexit" referendum of 2016.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.
We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.
The UK currently has no legal criteria for referendums. Each referendum requires legislation which sets out the terms of the referendum, and any conditions that would require a result to be implemented.
You would however be welcome to start a petition asking the Government to create legislation requiring a majority of 60% in future referendums in order for the result to be implemented.
