Petition Action

Allow child benefit to be claimed on household income, not individual income.

Petition Details

At present an individual who earns over £50000 and claims child benefit is taxed regardless of their partners earnings. This should be changed to allow households to join their income together and child benefit be claimed with a household income of £80000.

Additional Information

The present system allowed 2 parents to earn £49000 each and still claim child benefit. Where are one parent who earns over £50000 pays tax on this benefit and earners over £60000 the benefit is stopped. This current system does not take into account partners earning. For some household their income is only £50k-£60k this is unfair that they lose this benefit or receive and un-welcome tax bill which they have to pay.
