Trial a nationwide Universal Basic Income for all citizens of the UK
Pay every citizen of the UK a weekly Universal Basic Income of initially between £50 and £100 a week (to be decided by parliament) as a trial to eradicate poverty and eliminate the "benefit trap" that disincentivises work by causing welfare claimants to lose out when they take jobs.
Workers are being displaced from their jobs by automation, self-employed people face the prospect of weathering global pandemics without sick pay, unemployed welfare claimants are stuck in cycles of poverty due to counterproductive benefit regimes, and the fruits of productive technology not being redistributed fairly.
It's time to try another way.
Past UBI trials have showed increased happiness (Finland), reduced hospitalisation rates ("Mincome"), and reduced poverty-related crime (Namibia).
