Petition Action

Require a visual representation of sugar content on confectionery labels.

Petition Details

I want the Government to require all confectionary to have a visual representation of sugar content on their packaging. Making people visually aware of sugar content should help people make an informed decision.

Additional Information

More than 1 in 5 children are overweight or obese when they begin school, and 1 in 3 children are overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school. Type 2 diabetes – which people who are obese are at a high risk of developing – accounts for 1/10 of the annual NHS spend.

Whilst sugar alone isn’t the only factor, it is a significant factor. Current labels don’t make it easy enough for everyone to understand how much sugar a product contains. By requiring a visual representation of sugar content children and adults should be able to understand far clearer and therefore make better choices. Hopefully this will see a decline in obesity and related health issues including type 2 diabetes and other chronic illnesses.
