Petition Action

Increase Student Loan for term 2 where students have lost income due to Covid-19

Petition Details

Most students live off Zero-Hour contracts. The recent cancellations due to Covid-19 have caused many to lose vital income.
Students are calling the government and Student Finance England, SFE, to 'top-up' their student loans for term 2. This will allow students to continue studying into next term

Additional Information

Students rely on their termly loans and various other sources to enable them to study and live their everyday lives - some student loans are as low as £3124 per year! This is not enough to live on without extra paid work.

Without additional support in this uncertain time, students need resources to continue studying, any disruption to studying can cause long term effects both at individual and industrial scales.

Investing in students at this time should be a prime priority!

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The payment of student loans is a matter for the Student Loans Company and Student Finance England, not the Government or Parliament.

We have published a petition calling on the Government to reimburse all students of this year’s fees due to strikes and COVID-19, which you might like to sign: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302855

We have also published a petition calling on the Government to freeze student loan payments and interest accrual for Covid-19, which you might like to sign: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/308579

We understand that the current situation is stressful for many people, including students. Student Minds, a mental health charity for students, is collating guidance and developing resources to support students experiencing stress as a result of the current situation, which you may find useful: www.studentminds.org.uk/coronavirus.html
