Protected time for elderly people in supermarkets

Petition Details

Ask supermarkets to provide protected time for elderly people to do their essential shopping.

Additional Information

Elderly people, the most vulnerable category to COVID-19, are currently exposed to possibly infectious crowds of young people trying to stock up on food. With the virus predicted to last months can we ask the supermarkets to provide 1-2 hours of protected for elderly people. Some stores in USA and Australia are already opening 1-2 hours earlier to provide what they call as ‘Elderly time’

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The opening arrangements for supermarkets are a matter for individual retailers, not the Government or Parliament. A number of retailers have announced plans to open early for elderly or vulnerable customers. You should contact your local supermarket to find out if they have put such arrangements in place.

The Government has made certain changes to enable supermarkets to work together during the coronavirus outbreak, particularly to serve customers who are elderly, ill or vulnerable: www.gov.uk/government/news/supermarkets-to-join-forces-to-feed-the-nation
