The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

It is up to individual retailers and restaurants to decide what forms of payment to accept, not the Government or Parliament.

The Government's guidance to some sectors already recommends that they avoid handling cash and use mobile or contactless card payments.

You could ask the Government to update its advice to recommend to all businesses and consumers that they should avoid handling cash and use mobile or contactless card payments.
