Petition Action

Encourage student halls to reduce the final semester rent due to COVID-19.

Petition Details

We are requesting that for students that have left university halls due to the COVID-19 outbreak, that a moderate percentage of the outstanding rent be alleviated. The remainder of the rent to be earmarked for those employees at the company that require pay for the rest of the licensing period.

Additional Information

We have been ordered by Unis to self-isolate at home and are required to continue paying rent. Maintenance loans do not cover one semester’s rent, so we have to find jobs to make ends meet. Many of us are on leave from work as companies encourage self-isolation, leaving us in a difficult situation.

A survey that I conducted from ages 18-60 found that students have an average of £2630.59 left to pay. When asked “Is it fair that students should pay rent if Uni told you to go home?” 90% said “No".

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Suspending payments or providing refunds for tuition fees and rent are a matter for individual universities and landlords, and not the UK Government or Parliament.

If you want the Government to refund university rent and tuition fees due to coronavirus, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302855

If you want the Government to encourage lenders, landlords and utilities to freeze payments during lockdown, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302256

If you have concerns about your university's arrangements for teaching and assessment you should raise these with your university or the Office for Students, which regulates the higher education sector.
