Include the self employed in a wage package of support through Covid 19
Greater support is needed for sole traders and the self employed. The government can use peoples last self assessment payment to see a true picture of the person’s earnings. The government should follow the same line as other wage earners and support self employed with 80% of their earnings also.
This will ensure self employed business do not collapse during this time. More importantly it will ensure that people do not risk spreading the virus by continuing with work that cannot be done at home. Sole traders and self employed want to do the right thing for their families and the community but pressure to pay bills, mortgage etc may encourage people to continue to work and risk infection. The government must help. These workers pay in to the tax system also and must not be penalised.

Since this petition was started, the Government has said that most self-employed people can claim a taxable grant worth 80% of their trading profits up to a maximum of £2,500 per month for the next 3 months.
