COVID-19 and infection control in supermarkets, PM to make urgent request.
22/03/2020, just returned from a rammed supermarket. We’re trying to distance, however still need to shop.
We call on the PM to urgently instruct retailers, infection control advisors and government to work together to take practical action to reduce the spread at supermarkets ASAP.
The extreme but sensible measures so far feel futile without basic steps at supermarkets
Suggestions
1.Trolleys at a single point, where a team of staff clean handles when taking away/returning
2.Increased cleaning at high contact areas (till belts/card machines)
3.Staff hired to increase delivery/ click+collect
4. Improved hand hygiene by checkout staff (hand washing/ single use gloves)
5. Limiting people in store. People were climbing over each other now
6. Increase rather than reduce hours

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Since you started your petition the Government has published guidance for food businesses on coronavirus, including on how to maintain social distancing and good hygiene:
www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-guidance-for-food-businesses/guidance-for-food-businesses-on-coronavirus-covid-19#social-distancing
Making changes to how they operate in response to this guidance is a matter for individual supermarkets. Many supermarkets have made changes to their opening hours, including having dedicated shopping time for particular groups of customers, and have also limited the number of people allowed in their shops at one time.
We have accepted petitions calling on the Government to make a number of changes that relate to supermarkets, which you might like to sign:
Introduce limits on per customer purchases in all supermarkets: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/300766
Allow larger supermarkets to remain open without restricted hours on Sundays: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302665
Encourage retailers to prioritise those over 70 shopping online for essentials: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/301126
