Cancel final semester rent for university students

Petition Details

University students that have decided its best to stay at home with their families during this strange and scary time where they are still unsure of what is happening with their exams and degrees should not have to pay rent for their final semester or at least be able to end their contracts early.

Additional Information

Some students do not get a student loan that covers their entire rent payments and have lost their jobs by having to move home or as their work has shut and therefore will struggle to pay and they will not be there. It would be great if there was a way our landlords are unaffected but students do not have to pay when they can’t afford to in this difficult time.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Suspending payments or providing refunds for tuition fees and rent are a matter for individual universities and landlords, and not the UK Government or Parliament.

If you want the Government to refund university rent and tuition fees due to coronavirus, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302855

If you want the Government to encourage lenders, landlords and utilities to freeze payments during lockdown, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302256

If you have concerns about your university's arrangements for teaching and assessment you should raise these with your university or the Office for Students, which regulates the higher education sector.
