The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Since you started your petition the Government has announced that it is stopping all gatherings of more than two people in public: www.gov.uk/government/publications/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others
The Government has also published guidance on maintaining social distancing in supermarkets: www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-guidance-for-food-businesses/guidance-for-food-businesses-on-coronavirus-covid-19#maintaining-social-distancing-in-specific-food-business-settings
Implementing this guidance is a matter for individual supermarkets.
While a number of supermarkets have imposed limits on the number of items that shoppers can purchase, the Government has not required retailers to do so. We have published a petition calling on the Government to introduce limits on per customer purchases in all supermarkets, which you might like to sign: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/300766
