Allow university students to terminate accommodation contracts due to COVID-19
Students across the country have been strongly advised by their university to pack up belongings and leave their student accommodation for the remainder of the academic year. However, students are still being expected to pay rent for this time and no support or advice has been provided.
Clear information for students and landlords needs to be provided regarding contract obligations and measures should be put in place allowing students who are not using accommodation to not pay rent for the remainder of their tenancy agreement.
Many students have lost jobs or seen a significant reduction in hours due to COVID-19 and do not have the money to pay rent for rooms they are not using.
