Increase maintenance loans for 2020-2021 university students due to COVID-19
We would like to request an increase in the maximum maintenance loans for students between 2020-2021, raising the current thresholds by 15-25% and/or alternatively providing this as a grant to those most affected by the current situation.
Students often lack a steady income and in the wake of the current pandemic, many are left uncertain of their financial situations, both heading into or continuing at university. In order to provide aid and security to said students, we ask to at least raise the current maintenance loan thresholds this year. This will ensure that those who have been forced to remain in their homes over the upcoming months and have lost their current jobs will not have their studies and future careers impacted.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
The payment of student loans is a matter for the Student Loans Company and Student Finance England, not the Government or Parliament.
We have published a petition calling on the Government to reimburse all students of this year’s fees due to strikes and COVID-19, which you might like to sign: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302855
We have also published a petition calling on the Government to freeze student loan payments and interest accrual for Covid-19, which you might like to sign: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/308579
We understand that the current situation is stressful for many people, including students. Student Minds, a mental health charity for students, is collating guidance and developing resources to support students experiencing stress as a result of the current situation, which you may find useful: www.studentminds.org.uk/coronavirus.html
