Petition Action

Urge universities to partially refund tuition fees due to COVID-19

Petition Details

Most university courses require £9250 annually in tuition fees. COVID-19 has caused disruption and cancellation of almost half an academic year. University facilities are closed, students have no access to necessary equipment and teaching has been severely reduced to suit a basic online platform.

Additional Information

This is such an upsetting waste of young people's money. Already starting life with a vast debt that is constantly growing due to a considerable interest rate, it is unlikely we will find employment for some time. Third year students are the worst hit by the consequences of COVID-19 yet our situation has not been at all addressed by government measures.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Suspending payments or providing refunds for tuition fees and rent are a matter for individual universities and landlords, and not the UK Government or Parliament.

If you want the Government to refund university rent and tuition fees due to coronavirus, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302855

If you want the Government to encourage lenders, landlords and utilities to freeze payments during lockdown, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302256

If you have concerns about your university's arrangements for teaching and assessment you should raise these with your university or the Office for Students, which regulates the higher education sector.

We understand that the current situation is stressful for many people. Student Minds, a mental health charity for students, is collating guidance and developing resources to support students experiencing stress as a result of the current situation, which you may find useful: www.studentminds.org.uk/coronavirus.html
